Through the Darkness

Pitiful. The demon rose his elongated index finger to his rugged chin. He watched in silence from his perch, as the group left. Demons, humans, they were all the same. Malum found humor in the fact that the two groups sought to destroy one another, but it was in their nature. It was why they had to be destroyed. The world could start again anew once they were taken care of.

Stuck in an endless cycle of sorrow and agony, but I will be the one to free them.”

But his musings came to a sudden halt. He could hear something, or rather, he could feel it. Malum had long since grown sensitive to the presence of other life forms, particularly when hunger was involved. Whatever it was, it was beneath the ground. He wasn’t too keen upon traveling downward, having just escaped from the abyss, but his need for sustenance far outweighed any uneasiness that he had about the situation.

How very interesting. He licked his lips in anticipation.

It was easy enough to track down the tunnels that led to the depths below the volcano. However, it was a much more difficult task to dispose of the serpent that he had encountered. The poor beast was no match for the convict, however. Within moments, Ekaitz had succumbed to Malum’s strength and had become part of a greater purpose.

What the demon did not anticipate, while gorging himself on the energy of his victim, was the arrival of another specimen. The lass must have been living in the tunnels as well, stirring when the serpent had made those wretched sounds in protest. She let out a horrified scream at the sight of Ekaitz laying lifeless upon the floor of his beloved tunnel. In a fit of rage, she burst forward, only to be taken in by Malum with open arms. The woman gasped for air, her dense red locks flinging every which way as she struggled to escape from the demon’s deathly embraced. But after only a short while, her struggling ended, and she moved no more. Siren was dead.

And now your suffering has ended,” he whispered to the corpses at his feet. The demon brushed the hair out of Siren’s face, ceremoniously placing her body next to that of the serpent’s.

He felt full, energized. Balling his scaled hands into fists, he felt the energy coursing throughout his body. It was wonderful. For so long he had been empty. But he needed more. Just a little more. He cocked his head to the side, his emblazoned eyes striving to stare down through the darkness of the tunnels ahead. But it was no use, he was going to have to travel for himself to see what was down the road.

Ah, no matter…it is time I see all that the Surface has to offer….”

Blood. Sweat. Tears.

The demon’s flesh was on fire. Within his head was screaming, incoherent words, the cries of pain and suffering. The torturous sound reached a crescendo as he struggled to break free of his chains. One by one they snapped, first from his scaled arms and then his scarred legs, and his massive horns were the last to finally be freed from the snare. He grinned a wicked smile as he looked down at the broken bits of metal links.

Freedom.

He looked around his surroundings with a new air. It was quiet, though his skin still crawled as though he were being watched. Had all the demons truly gone to the Surface? He felt it necessary to see for himself.

His hunger grew, day after day, as he wandered through the darkness. He had been locked away for thousands of years, and his sense of time was warped. The demon did not know if the war with the Goddess had ended, whether the demons were victorious or defeated. All he knew is that his master, his creator, was gone. He felt his connection severed, as though he were missing a limb. It was a strange, albeit liberating feeling.

Right as he felt he could go no further, he found a light at the end of the tunnel. Licking his lips hungrily he rushed forward, only to be taken back by the sunlight. He shut his crimson eyes in pain. The light was a harsh welcome after an eternity in the darkness.

After a few moments, he was able to open his eyes and what pleasantly surprised by what he saw. Greenery, water, life. He felt his hunger intensify as he began to tread forward in search of something that would sate his appetite.

The juvenile jellyfish demon had spent the greater part of the morning(and evening, actually) floating wherever the current decided to take her. It was a lazy way to spend time, and while there were better things to do she opted for the peace of the lake.

For a little while, at least. There was movement in the trees, seemingly frantic. Was someone in trouble? Now that Mister Cabhan was awake, it had become increasingly dangerous to accidentally wander into the woods. Whether you were demon or human. She swam a bit closer to the figure, following their trek from the shore.

“Are you lost?” She called out, stopping her swimming to bob up and down. “You better be careful or else Cabhan will be angry!!” She warned, bobbing in place. “I dunno where he is though so if you wanna turn around and leave the forest really quickly I won’t tell on you! I promise!” She said, smiling widely and pointing in the direction where the exit to the forest no doubt was.

The creature came to a quick halt, ceasing all motion only to turn his head and give the young demon a sideways glance. Her smile was returned. Scarlet eyes glistening with his dark intent while he carefully made his way over to her, as though he were concerned of startling her.

I am a bit lost, yes….how very fortunate that I should run into you.” His voice was unnaturally soothing, an ethereal sound that reverberated off of the forestry. He locked eyes with her, crouching to where he was almost eye level with the girl.

Would you mind helping me find the way out of this forest?” He extended his dark, jagged hand so as to help her from the water.

She reached out for his hand, floating from the water to the shore using her bell. Her smile didn’t leave her face as she floated, slightly touching the grass with a foot. The demon in front of her was considerably taller- a bit of a reminder of how short the young demon was. She had already come to accept the fact that this was as big as she was going to get, at least she still had her human form looking a bit taller.

“I wouldn’t mind at all!” She squeaked, happily. “I’m not sure how you wandered in here mister, but I wouldn’t want you to get in trouble from Cabhan.” She looked deep in thought for a moment. Where would she take him? Deniv wouldn’t be too fond of a strange demon showing up— and he sure was strange! She ‘hmm’d outloud, frowning slightly.

“Um, do you have any friends in any of the territories that you could maybe go to? I’m not sure where I should take you!” She said, crossing her arms under her bell and looking almost pouty. “Unless you don’t want to tell me, that’s okay too! Sometimes when my friend Keahi is being mean to me I pretend I don’t know him until he’s nice to me again.” She prattled off, bobbing up and down as she floated ahead a few steps.

“Okay are you ready? Follow me!”

I am ready.”

In a swift motion, he hoisted the young demon off of her feet with just one mangled arm. He pulled her close to him, in a deadly tight embrace. Slick tentacles quietly emerged from his scaly sides, wrapping around the girl so as to absorb her energy. It only took a matter of moments before he felt the life drain from her completely.

His hunger diminished ever so slightly. But it wasn’t enough, not nearly.

Fear not,” he said solemnly, ceremoniously placing her lifeless form on the ground next to the lake’s edge. “For you have become part of a greater purpose.”

Malum gave the body one last regard before receding back into the shadows of the forest. He could sense the bustling life forms ahead. He knew where to go.

Sad to you perhaps. I don’t really care what you think though. Besides, what do you expect to do about it?

There is much to be done, but I’ll not be telling you of my plans. You will see them soon enough. And you will be grateful, for I am your salvation.

kuroithedemon replied to your post: The Surface looks even more dismal than it did in my youth….

Ah well, ya learn to live with it. *shrugs*

So you simply adapt to mediocrity? How very sad.
